Blu-ray DVD Copy-Protection Circumvented

A Video has been posted on YouTube showing a backup copy of a Blu-ray movie being sucessfully played on a PC.

Just like HD-DVD, the Blu-ray disc format has been hailed by its makers as having unbreakable copy protection called AACS encoded into each disc.

This protection has been circumvented for both formats by people obtaining the legitimate disc's 'key' used for PC-based playback, then using this key to fool the playback software into thinking that a copied disc backup is infact the original movie.

This will lead (and has already led) to Blu-ray & HD-DVD movies appearing on the internet for people to download illegally, if the playback key is distributed alongside the movie then people are likely to be able to get movies playing with just a copied disc.

The rival HD-DVD format discs' copy protection was hacked last month when a video was posted showing a movie being copied onto a PC - See Article >>

It is clearly not possible to make unbreakable copy protection.
