Electronic Music Part 1: The Early Days - 1970's & 80's


Kraftwerk playing new electronic drum pads in 1975In the 1960's & 70's bands like Pink Floyd were starting to adopt the use of electronic instruments, German band Kraftwerk were pioneers of the electronic sound in the early-mid 70's, Germany seemed to readily take to the synthesizers. Jazz pianists also started to use synthesizers at the same time in the early 70's.

Artists including Ultravox, Gary Numan, The Human League, Eurythmics, Depeche Mode and New Order, all developed music on the new digital synths & samplers, and had to find out new techniques to use on the new machines. Many different styles of music were developed as the 80's progressed using the new capabilities of digital production. Eighties electro music was very popular as the technology opened up through the decade, electro influencing funk & hip-hop with artists like Afrika Bambaataa & The Sonic Soul Force bringing us electro-funk.

Alesis SR-16, a classic programmable drum machine. With the new technology, much faster and more intricate, precise beats and rythyms could be produced than ever before, this led to the formation of techno in Detroit, and house music in Chicago, both almost entirely based on digital production. Later in the UK the acid house scene started and people were raving in fields before the nightclubs adopted the music in the early-mid 1990's and the dance music scene entered the mainstream.
