Electronic Music Part 2: Dance Music 1990'sSee Part 1: 'The Rise of Electronic Music - The Early Days'.
Since the early days, dance music has developed many sub-genres;Out of the early acid house in the UK came oldschool hardcore, leading to jungle and drum & bass through the 90's, all remain popular in clubs today. Chicago house spread to Detroit, and Detroit techno spread to Germany, the Detroit techno movement also brought much of the Chicago house to the UK & Europe. House had a following in the UK at the same time as the Chicago scene, as early as 1986, the Hacienda club in Manchester and the 'Northern Soul' genre, the Happy Mondays and similar groups were key to the progression of house music. House was developing in Ibiza aswell, clubs like Amnesia were playing some house and this caught the attention of the UK scene. In 1987 DJs including Paul Oakenfold and Danny Rampling brought the Ibiza sound to clubs in the UK.
Early trance was developed by The KLF in the UK acid house scene, but trance gained momentum with influences of German techno and Frankfurt is said by many to be the birthplace of trance. Early trance was heavily inspired by the acid house movement to make acid trance. In the mid-1990's trance developed its commercial potential and became a wide hit with clubbers & ravers particularly in the UK & Europe. Similarly in the late-80's & early-90's, a music revolution was happening in Goa, India. Digital music production enabled them to make Goa trance, influenced by Hindu culture and psychedelic drugs (such as magic mushrooms, mescaline & LSD.) this progressed to become Psy-trance in the mid-late 1990's and was brought back to London & Sheffield in the UK and nowadays has a loyal subculture in the UK & Europe.
Reggae had been big in the UK since the 1960's, but it generally was not electronic based. Reggae / Dub artists & sound engineers in Jamaica and the UK developed ingenious analog mixing desks with multi-track tape recorders for their dubbing studios. They were also pioneers of analog sound manipulation, filter and effects processing, using spring reverbs & tape delay units wired up to the mixing desk. Jamaican artists like King Tubby, Lee Perry, Scientist, Augustus Pablo, and others developed their techniques during the 1970's and 1980's, these were then picked up by musicians in the UK who started to develop digital dub reggae with their technology, giving birth to a small scene in the UK, particularly among the West Indian communities in Brixton (South London), and Leeds & some of Northern England. Look up artists including Iration Steppas, Nucleus Roots, Zion Train and Mad Professor. In the early 1990's people were creating some very experimental music, the first electronic music label in the UK was Warp Records, founded in 1989, their most famous artist is Aphex Twin, a man from Cornwall, UK, who creates extremly intricate, techno influenced music.
