Replacement Wii straps, new & improved?
Back in November 2006, shortly after the release of the Wii around the world, Nintendo announced that it would replace the standard Wiimote controller wrist straps because they were breaking while in use, sending the Wiimote flying across the room, breaking TV's and other household objects, and sometimes causing injuries to people. Are the new straps any better? Take a look at this picture produced by Nintendo to aid people in finding out which version strap they have. ![]() It doesn't look that different, the bit that loops round the controller is thicker on the new ones, it's obvious that they couldn't make it much thicker because the controller only has a small hole for it, Nintendo need to redesign the controller to have a larger hole for the strap, but that would be a nightmare for them.
The new strap can't be unbreakable, there are still stories of people damaging things in the news, and the Wiimote does not necessarily have to come out of your hand to injure yourself or others, or damage something. As the Wii Damage & Injury Video (Watch vid >>) shows, it's entirely possible to hit a glass lampshade and badly cut your hand while playing tennis on Wii Sports, that would not have been prevented with a new strap.People should be more careful, after all, it's not really Nintendo's fault. They have just given people a new way to interact with games, to get more involved - they didn't realise that people would get so involved that they forgot about their living room furnishings. If you have a Wii with the old straps and need replacements, Nintendo have set up a form on a page of their site where you can request replacement straps.
