Wii Shop - Exchanging points for retro games
Fans of retro console gaming will love the functionality that Nintendo built into the Wii that allows people to connect to the Wii Shop channel 'Virtual Console' and download their favourite classic games from the NES, SNES, N64, plus you can also get SEGA Megadrive games and Turbographx games.
However this comes at a cost, precisely £7.50 for each N64 game, and £3.75 for a NES game. You buy 'points' to use as currency to buy the games and then download them to your console, either you enter your Visa/Mastercard details online on the Wii, or purchase a Wii Points card, 2000 points for £14.99 on Amazon. But 2000 points wont buy you much, each N64 game is 1000 points and NES games 500 points.
You may have many old console games lying around that you purchased years ago, but if you want to play the game on your new Wii then you'll have to pay to download it again. Also the downloads are only programmed to run on the console it is downloaded to, you can't copy or backup the game you've just paid to download, but apparently if you lose the game or get a new console you can contact Nintendo and they will permit you to download the game again.
There aren't even many titles available to download yet on the Wii Shop channel, Nintendo are planning to have more added by the end of 2007, but that is a while away yet.
The Wii requires a wireless router for its connection to the internet, a USB-to-network cable is available but is specially made and at around
