The Xbox 360
It is interesting to look at the sales figures for all the major consoles during the month of November 2006, in the lead-up to Christmas.

Out of the Next-Gen consoles; the Xbox 360 came top with 511,000 units sold, Nintendo Wii in second with 476,000 & PlayStation 3 trailing with only 197,000 consoles sold due to Sony having a really bad time over the launch, only releasing the console in Japan & the USA, and even then they did not have anywhere near enough units to cover the huge demand. If Sony had been able to produce enough consoles, then the PS3 would certainly have been the biggest hit amongst gamers, but alas it was not so, and the PS3 is still not out in Europe.

The long awaited PlayStation 3, in silver. We remember that the Wii and the PS3 were launched only shortly before these stats, while the Xbox 360 had enjoyed 12 months of sales previously as the only Next-Gen console on the market and has racked up 10 million sales worldwide in just over 12 months.

Sony fared much better with the redesigned PlayStation 2, which sold 664,000 units. Making the PS2 the second most bought console in November 2006, more sales than any Next-Gen console.

The handheld market seems very strong, the Nintendo DS had the most sales of any console at 918,000 units sold. Another handheld, the Game Boy Advance is still very popular with 641,000 sales, almost beating the PlayStation 2. It is a shame that the PSP does not seem to be included in the statistics.

The Nintendo Wii Gears of War was the top selling console game in November 2006 with a huge 1 million copies sold. Second was Final Fantasy XII, which sold 896,000, and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess took third place with 412,000 copies sold.

It will be interesting to see if Sony does any better next year. Some of the problems with the PS3 launch were due to parts for the Blu-ray player in the console - adding a high definition Blu-ray DVD player as standard on the PS3 was a risky gamble, but in the long term it should ensure the console's popularity and gives it an edge over Microsoft's Xbox 360.

The statistics were compiled by The NPD Group (www.npd.com), who perform data collection and analysis on behalf of businesses.
