WowWee - Robotics for the masses
WowWee have made a huge name for themselves in the field of robot toys in the last few years. They have definitely brought affordable, programmable robots to general consumers - mainly advertised towards children as you can see by the adverts on the WowWee website.
Affordable robots also hold an appeal to adults, the Honda Asimo and Sony's Aibo & Qrio, among others, have inspired peoples interest in humanoid and other entertainment robots, but none of them were produced affordably and consistantly like WowWee have managed.
Their breakthrough product, the RoboSapien, was released in 2004. The RoboSapien was designed & invented by Mark Tilden, a UK-born robotics physicist living in Canada, who also worked on NASA's Mars robots. RoboSapien was designed in a way that it could be easily hacked or modified by people. Read more about Hacking & Modifying RoboSapien >>
WowWee have expanded their robotics range beyond the original RoboSapien to include;
RoboSapien V2, a much improved but more expensive version. www.robosapienv2online.comRoboSapien Media, which plays & records audio & video. www.rsmediaonline.com RoboReptile, controllable agressive lizard with different moods. www.roboreptileonline.com RoboPet, nice little robo-dog with amazing sensors like the rest. www.robopetonline.com RoboRaptor, dinosaur with gripping jaws, changable moods & more. www.roboraptoronline.com And a range of Mini-Robos, miniature robots that aren't remote controlled but move nicely on a small scale. www.wowwee.com/mini
The new FlyTech DragonFly is WowWee's first try with flying robots, it was designed by an aeronautics student and WowWee bought the rights to produce and sell it. The DragonFly is released this year currently exclusive to RadioShack in the USA, and only $50.. Can't wait until they hit the UK.Watch some videos of the Dragonfly >>
But they haven't stopped there, the Chimpanzee from WowWee Alive is an incredibly realistic looking & behaving chimp head & shoulders. It has moods, infrared vision, touch sensors, stereo sound sensors, responding to a remote control or set to autonomous interactivity mode. Amazing, www.wowweealiveonline.com.
