Hitec Robonova-1 humanoid robot
The Robonova-1 was released in 2005, a year after the KHR-1 was introduced by Kondo. Robonova-1 is the result of Korean company Hitec's robot research, and built on the same framework as KHR-1. The Robonova-1 has very similar functionality to Kondo's robots, being capable of performing martial arts moves, cartwheels and walking, but RN-1 is much evolved from the early KHR-1.Robonova-1 is driven by 16 digital servo motors in each of it's joints giving it 16 Degrees of Freedom (DOF). The robot is designed to be built in around 8 hours, although construction is likely to span over two or more days. The manual and software for Robonova-1 comes in English and support is available worldwide.
Similarly to the Kondo robots and Bioloid, programming Robonova can be done with the 'Catch & Play' method; by physically moving the robot into a desired position, the software saves this position, then you adjust the robot to form a different pose. The software calculates the transition between the two poses and will play out an unlimited sequence of poses with varying transition speeds, allowing for smooth flowing motions and then quick flinches into another position - perfect for emulating martial arts moves.
Unlike the Kondo KHR-1, Robonova-1 is actively marketed outside of Japan & Korea. Hitec paid special attention to putting together European versions of the kits, complete with CE certification (which ensures smooth edges and other things to make it safe enough for us Europeans) and a seperate box containing the European battery charger. Robonova-1 is a very appealing first robot kit, it is very agile, easy to build, strong frame, good scripting software and RoboBasic programming code for getting more deeply involved.
Modification of Robonova-1 is fairly straightforward, many different sensors are available to add-on to the robot, often made specifically for the RN-1, including a popular Sonar sensor that comes fitted in the middle of a modified chest plate.
