PlayStation 3 European Release 23rd March 2007
Sony says the PlayStation 3 will go on sale in Europe on the 23rd March 2007 at a price of 599 Euros (£425 in the UK).Only the more expensive 60GB model will be available at launch, with the more affordable 20GB model coming at a later date. ![]() The PS3 was originally going to be launched in Spring 2006, but copy protection problems with the Blu-ray discs meant that release was delayed quite significantly. Sony then announced that the console will go on sale in Japan & the USA in November 2006, but it wouldn't be released in Europe until the Spring. The explanation Sony gave for this was that due to not being able to mass produce enough Blu-ray players for the consoles, it was better for them to focus on two market areas (Japan & the USA) rather than risking failure if they tried to release it in three areas. They also said that Europe was logistically the most complex market for distribution. The PlayStation 3 is the most eagerly awaited console for a long time, Sony has put together a console with outstanding features, it really shows that it has had an extra year of development over the Xbox 360. But still there remain reletively few game titles for the PS3, more are expected all the time, but only 5 games were available in Japan & the USA at launch, Europeans can expect there to be 30 different titles available on 23rd March. View a list of all the PS3 game titles available on release day >> Sony has sold around 2 million PS3 consoles since the November launch of the console in Japan & the USA. They say that 1 million PlayStation 3's will be on shelves in Europe at the launch on 23rd March. About a quarter of that number will be available in the UK. Sony also said that the PS3 will launch in Russia on 20th April and a release date for India will be announced soon.
