Hacking & Modifying RoboSapien
RoboSapien was designed to be easily modified & hacked by people, it's casing is easily opened with regular screws and the electronics are accessible and labelled. Some mods are pretty simple and worthwhile, including this LED Vision Hack, which looks pretty simple and vastly improves the robots vision and object recognition.
There are a few mods that look a bit dangerous, like the RoboSapien V2 with a small flamethrower on one arm and a wire-coil bb-gun on the other, the videos are great - Flame-o-Sapien & Coil-o-Sapien. These mods are great because the guy even implanted a RF transmitter into the RS V2 remote to control the flamethrower & bb gun, works very well.
Reading about all these modifications makes the RoboSapien very appealing, it would be great to get one and do a few hacks like adding the LED's, some small speakers from an iPod dock or other portable speakers and velcro an mp3 player to his back. Try stripping down some wireless headphones so you can transmit audio & voice from a microphone to RoboSapien. Even attach a little wireless video camera to view the world from the robots perspective. It could all get a bit pricey but it'd be great to have a kitted up RoboSapien that played mp3s and transmitted wireless video. I'm really quite tempted, although you could just put the stuff on a remote controlled car, which'd be pretty cool, but not so robotic - and it wouldn't dance.
On another modding note; In Germany, in 2005 the first football match was played between two teams of three modified RoboSapiens controlled by two universities at the RoboCup. Their heads were replaced with PDA's, allowing the robot to look through the camera and also utilise the PDA's infrared sensor for control purposes.Links: The Unofficial RoboSapien Hacks & Mods Site WowWee RoboSapien V2 Site WowWee RoboSapien Site Marcus @ EvoSapien EvoSapien Website Buy WowWee's Robots at very reasonable prices from Amazon: Email this story to a friend ![]() Add this link to: |
