What next for my Canon DSLR?I often find myself wanting to upgrade my Canon 350D 'Rebel XT' I got in 2005, it is still a great camera but in those 3 years I've learned an awful lot about photography.. Like most people, a professional camera is way out of budget.. and I'm not sure if I want or need to upgrade the camera itself anyway.
Half the camera is the lens, and all too often I end up using the reletively poor 18-55mm kit lens for general snapping out and about, mainly on the 18mm wide angle end, allowing photos of really large things to fit in the viewfinder - and this seems to be what I am often photographing, buildings, scenery, etc. and personally I do actually quite like the 'warped' lens distortion, I know it's not ideal. Maybe splashing out on a nice 60mm macro was not the best idea, but it shows me that a higher quality lens does allow for higher quality photos. So I regularly think that a new lens is the way to go, but what do I want? Ideally I don't want to be carrying around 3 lenses - just one that does almost everything!
I'm quite encouraged to see that Canon have announced a new 'do-everything' 18-200mm lens, as seen here, I have been considering the EF-S 18-85mm IS lens for some time now, as that would fit my usage - the new 18-200mm would surely be even better. I rarely use a telephoto lens, but this is mainly down to the hassle of switching lenses, and often don't take it with me in the first place. If you spend a lot of time checking out new equipment on the internet, you've probably come across Steve's Digicams website (steves-digicams.com), I stumbled upon an interesting interview with the admin of Steve's Digicams website, provides some insight into their review process.
For those who have not yet ventured into the world of digital SLR cameras, I cannot recommend it enough - though I do miss the portability of a pocket size compact camera. The latest Canon DSLRs, the Canon EOS Rebel XSi (450D) and Canon EOS Rebel XS (1000D) released in April and August 2008 respectively, look like a huge improvement over the first consumer 'Rebel' series cameras.
